President Donald Trump has said "it's time for peace" after Iran retaliated against the U.S. involvement in its ongoing conflict with Israel, according to the New York Times.

The conflict stemmed from Israel's surprise attack on dozens of Iranian nuclear and military targets on June 13. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said Iran was close to being able to produce a bomb, while Iranian officials insist its nuclear ambitions are peaceful.

Trump has called for Iran to abandon its nuclear program. The U.S. and Iran were reportedly engaged in talks when Trump shared his decision on Saturday (June 21) to strike three Iranian nuclear facilities.

"The U.S. military carried out massive precision strikes on the three key nuclear assemblies in the Iranian regime: Fordo, Natanz, and Isfahan," Trump said Saturday during his address to the nation. "Our objective was the destruction of Iran's nuclear enrichment capacity and a stop to the nuclear threat posed by the world's number one state sponsor of terror."

Iran previously said it would retaliate if the U.S. involved itself in its conflict with Israel.

On Monday (June 23), Iran launched a missile attack on an American base in Qatar, the largest American military installation in the Middle East, in an apparent retaliation for U.S. strikes. Qatar’s air defenses intercepted the attack, and there have been no reports of injuries.

Following the incident, the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps said Iran “will never leave any aggression against its territorial integrity, sovereignty, or national security unanswered.” Iran said it's still committed to maintaining relations with Qatar, noting that the attack was “far away from urban installations and residential areas."

Reports state that Iranian officials gave Qatar advance notice of the attack to minimize casualties.

On Monday, Trump thanked Iran for the "early notice" and stated he would like Tehran to “proceed to Peace and Harmony in the Region, and I will enthusiastically encourage Israel to do the same.”

“NO Americans were harmed, and hardly any damage was done,” Trump said.

“Most importantly, they’ve gotten it all out of their ‘system,’ and there will, hopefully, be no further HATE. I want to thank Iran for giving us early notice, which made it possible for no lives to be lost, and nobody to be injured,” the president wrote in a post on Truth Social.

“CONGRATULATIONS WORLD, IT’S TIME FOR PEACE!" Trump added Monday in a separate Truth Social post.
