President Donald Trump’s administration is reportedly weighing ways to incentivize women to have more babies, including by methods similar to those employed by Adolf Hitler.
According to the New York Times, White House officials are convening with activists and birth advocates to come up with ideas to encourage women to have more babies amid concerns about declining birth rates.
One proposal involves giving moms a $5000 cash “baby bonus” after they’ve given birth. Another idea being considered is bestowing a “National Medal of Motherhood” to moms who have six or more children, a reward program previously used by authoritarian world leaders like Hitler and Joseph Stalin.
In 1930s Nazi Germany, Hitler introduced the "Cross of Honour of the German Mother," a decorative medal awarded to "children-rich" mothers of German heritage, with the exception of German Jews.
Stalin followed suit six years later, offering the “Order of Maternal Glory” to mothers with at least seven children. Soviet women who raised 10 or more children were awarded the "Mother Heroine" until the nation's collapse in 1991. In 2022, current Russian President Vladimir Putin brought back the award and added a payment of 1 million rubles, which is equivalent to more than $12,000.
The White House is also reportedly considering ideas to incentivize single people to get married, including a proposal to "reserve 30% of scholarships for the Fulbright program, the prestigious, government-backed international fellowship, for applicants who are married or have children."
In a statement, White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt said the administration “is proudly implementing policies to uplift American families.”
“The President wants America to be a country where all children can safely grow up and achieve the American dream,” Leavitt said. “As a mother myself, I am proud to work for a president who is taking significant action to leave a better country for the next generation.”
